For commissioners, social workers & PAs
Emergency & same-day placements.
A safe bridge tonight, a home within days. When a placement breaks down or a young person is leaving custody or hospital with nowhere to go, you need an answer now — held to the same discipline as a planned admission.
By the Milestone Young People practice team · Reviewed: August 2026
Milestone holds an emergency bridging option for care-experienced adults aged 18 and over: it gets a young person somewhere safe the same day and works to a planned move into one of our supported homes soon after. It is for a placement breakdown, a young person leaving custody or hospital, or an out-of-hours crisis — and it is governed to exactly the same age and scope discipline as any planned admission.
Emergency placements are where the market is most expensive and least careful. Authorities pay a heavy premium for crisis, out-of-area beds precisely because planned local capacity ran short. Our aim is to give you a fast, local, safe alternative — never a placement made in haste and regretted at leisure.
When to use it
- A placement breaks down in the evening and a young person has nowhere to sleep tonight.
- A young person is being released from custody, or discharged from hospital, with no accommodation arranged.
- An out-of-area or out-of-hours crisis where no planned bed is available and a same-day answer is needed.
How the pathway works
-
Same-day contact and a fast decision
Call or email us with what you know. We verify age and scope, take the immediate risk picture, and give you a decision quickly — a written decision within two hours where we have enough to work from.
-
A safe bridge tonight
On acceptance we get the young person somewhere safe the same day, with the essential safeguards in place — never a placement that trades safety for speed.
-
A planned move into a house
We work to a planned transition into one of our supported homes soon after, with the full needs and risk assessment, support plan and set-up that a planned admission receives.
- Same-day safety for a genuine emergency
- Age (18+) and scope verified before anyone is placed
- A target transition into a supported home soon after
- A spot rate quoted transparently, up front
- No personal care — a registered provider arranged alongside if it is ever needed
How it is priced
An emergency placement is quoted at a transparent spot rate, agreed before the placement is made. That rate covers the support line; Housing Benefit meets the rent as a separate line, exactly as in a planned placement. A same-day spot rate sits above a planned rate because of the rapid response and staffing it requires — but it is stated clearly up front, never opaque, and never blended with the rent. See our spot, block and DPS guide for how spot pricing works.
Contact and hours
Our referral and emergency lines open at launch (August 2026). From launch, an emergency route with a same-day response will be published here and on our referral page. Until then, please reach us through the contact page to register your authority's interest and set up an out-of-hours route in advance.
Frequently asked questions
Can you take an emergency or same-day placement?
Yes. We hold a bridging option for a night-time emergency, a placement breakdown, or a young person leaving custody or hospital. It gets a young person safe the same day and works to a planned move into one of our supported homes soon after, held to the same age and scope discipline as a planned admission.
How are emergency placements priced?
At a transparent spot rate, agreed up front, covering the support line; Housing Benefit meets the rent separately. Same-day rates sit above planned rates because of the rapid response required, but the rate is stated clearly before the placement — never opaque, never blended with rent.
Who can you take in an emergency?
Care-experienced adults aged 18 and over. We verify age and scope before placing, even in a crisis. We do not accommodate anyone under 18 and we do not provide personal care; where personal care is needed we arrange a registered provider alongside rather than absorbing it.
